Be Comfortable Speaking With Your Peers If you're more comfortable talking to strangers than you are to peers, you're not alone. Here's how to make it more comfortable. Speaking to a group isn't the time to focus on being liked. Love you, like you, feel lukewarm about you, your peers already know who you are. And if you're not that person, everything you say raises doubts. Consider it your #1 objective to deliver a clear message, and be yourself. It's your job to make your audience feel comfortable so they can benefit from what you have to say. One part of this is: Include only the information they need or care about and that you make it easy for them to get that information from your presentation. Mention names, give examples, use stories, make clear the connection between your words and their jobs. The other part is: Be yourself. Talk to them. Look at them. Acknowledge with your face, voice, words, and attitude that you recognize them as the same people you see in the hall. If they recognize you, they can relax and focus on your message. This class is about effective presentations, not perfect presentations." Moral: Don't waste your time trying to give a perfect presentation. Instead, commit to helping your audience. Usable Quotes Connecting to your audience includes saying ear-catching things and saying them in an engaging way. Regardless of the audience, there is something you can say that will tickle their interest bone. Start by collecting things you find amusing, interesting, mind-catching. For instance, here are some Will Rogers quotes someone forwarded to me that you might work into a business presentation. Never miss a good chance to shut up. Always drink upstream from the herd. If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back. After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut. It won't take long for you to get a good collection you can choose from every time you give a presentation.
