In this issue:
On my blog, someone suggested this website for quotations: http://shortquotes4u.blogspot.com/ Some audiences just naturally intimidate most people. Maybe a boss, maybe people with lots of money or power. But you’re more likely to get good results if you recognize that feeling intimidated is your choice and choose not to be intimidated. It's the choice of where you’re going to focus You can focus on how scary they are and the awful things that can happen, or focus on the ideas that need presenting. Look at it as an exchange between equals. They need what you’re going to tell them, and you need them to hear it. It's never about you. It's always about the ideas. And even if someone wants to make it about you, you can still choose to make it about the ideas. It takes some practice, but you can soon see the logic. When you make it about you and allow yourself to be intimidated your presentation suffers. Your voice, your body language, your choice of words all show how you’re feeling. And, if you try to pretend you're okay, all those aspects will still give you away. Your salvation is to get out of the way and let the ideas do their job. Bill Pickron, Director of Operations and customer Service, Medicis: “Of the 30 or so management classes I’ve taken, yours left a larger impact on me than most. I’m applying all the skills you taught, and gaining more and more confidence than ever. My poise, posture, critical thinking, awareness, and quieting of the mind, have all improved since the time spent together. It’s obvious you’re a pro at this stuff and know what you’re speaking of. Thanks again! STAYING FOCUSED AMID DISTRACTIONS How do you stay in the moment when there are distractions? Staying in the moment isn't about being rigidly focused It's about being able to sort out what has to be dealt with and what doesn't. If you have to change your focus from your talk while you focus on what to do about the distraction, you’re still in the moment. If the distraction isn't disturbing the audience, don't let it disturb you and continue on. If it is disturbing them, give it your full attention as you deal with it. Then return to your point. You'll probably need to pause as you make these decisions and as you return to your point. But those pauses only add to your credibility. And you stay in control of the meeting. “We find comfort among those who agree with us---growth among those who don’t” – Frank A. Clark “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.” – Groucho Marx “Every great business is built on friendship.” – JC Penney “Nobody stands taller than those willing to stand corrected.” – William Safire “Our biggest mistake is to think we are working for someone else. ” – Nashua Cavalier Thousands of people have to give presentations every day, and
